Rosemary Lombard
Rosemary Lombard is a Cape Town-based researcher, editor, curator and sound maker. Her practice engages colonial sound archives, the afterlives of historical collections and decolonial approaches to listening. Through sound editing, transcription and research, she explores how recorded voices can be heard across temporal, linguistic, cultural and institutional distances.
She holds an Honours degree in Social Anthropology and a postgraduate diploma in Library and Information Studies, and has completed the coursework component of an MPhil in Heritage and Public Culture. Rosemary is a founding member of the Sonic Exploration Network of Southern Africa (SENSA), a platform for exploratory music and sound art. In Echo Travels, she works across research, curation, sound editing and facilitation.
Anette Hoffmann
Anette Hoffmann’s sound installations, curatorial work and most of her writing engage with historical sound archives and audio-visual collections as sources of colonial history. Her work seeks to recirculate and multiply the presence and audibility of historical speakers, speaking positions, narrative genres and languages in public spaces. Her exhibition What We See (2009–13) travelled through five countries, from the Slave Lodge in Cape Town to the Institut Français in Windhoek. Her sound installations have been presented at venues including Bergen Assembly in 2019 and Dakar’s Théodore Monod Museum in 2024. In 2025, a video installation developed with Jannik Franzen from silent films and voice recordings from Namibia and Botswana was shown at the Into the Dark festival at the Volkskundemuseum in Vienna.
Her recent books include Knowing by Ear: Listening to Voice Recordings with African Prisoners of War in German Camps (1915–1918) (Duke University Press, 2024) and Listening to Colonial History: Echoes of Coercive Knowledge Production in Historical Sound Recordings from Southern Africa (Basler Afrika Bibliographien, 2023), published in German as Kolonialgeschichte hören (Mandelbaum Verlag). In Echo Travels, she works across research, curation, visual art, translation and workshop facilitation.
