Josef Ntwanumbi
The poster centred on the recorded voice of Josef Ntwanumbi from the Eastern Cape, South Africa, is in production. He spoke isiXhosa, and his songs were translated by Dr Phindezwa Mnyaka. He was recorded in a camp for civilian ‘foreign subjects’ in Ruhleben, Berlin, in 1917. At the request of German linguists, he sang about his internment in the form of a ‘traditional song’. The image serves as an avatar: it was taken by one of the inmates and shows an internee in front of barrack 13, where the African internees were housed.
